Germany is dotted with castles, but few feel quite as magical as Schloss Lichtenstein in Baden-Württemberg. A Castle Born from a Novel

Unlike medieval fortresses built for defense, Schloss Lichtenstein was born from romantic imagination. In the early 19th century, Duke Wilhelm of Urach fell in love with Wilhelm Hauff’s historical novel Lichtenstein, a swashbuckling tale of knights and honor set in the region. Inspired, the duke decided to build his own castle on the ruins of an older fortress.

Construction began in 1840, and by 1842 the new neo-Gothic castle stood complete—a celebration of the Middle Ages rather than a practical stronghold.

Legend has it that the cliff itself was considered “unconquerable” in earlier centuries. Local tales speak of hidden passages and daring knightly escapades, giving the castle a mythical aura even before its 19th-century rebirth.
